About Band
At Liberty, band is open to all students. There is no previous musical experience necessary, and there are many instrument options to choose from. There are three band classes offered:
- Beginning Band - This is where everyone starts. We start with learning/reviewing how to read music. We learn the basics of how to play a wind or percussion instrument, basic instrument maintenance, and build on our music reading skills. This band performs at least two public concerts per year to demonstrate our skills.
- Concert Band - This is the second year of band after students complete beginning band. We continue to develop our abilities on instruments and focus on ensemble skills. This band presents a winter concert in December, an adjudication concert in March, and a year-end concert. Students in concert band are eligible to try out for extracurricular (outside of school) ensembles, such as district honor band and Hanover County band. More information will be available in class.
- Symphonic Band - This is the third year of band after students complete beginning band and concert band. As our highest-level class and our premier ensemble, we will develop greater musical independence and expand essential knowledge, such as scales and rhythm reading, in preparation for continuing in Band. This band presents a winter concert in December, an adjudication concert in March, and a year-end concert. Students in symphonic band are encouraged to try out for extracurricular (outside of school) ensembles, such as district honor band and Hanover County band. More information will be available in class.
