Our Orchestras

Beginning Strings: This class is for beginning students on a string instrument. No prior experience is necessary. Success relies heavily on repetition and practice at home, so once students decide which instrument they want to play, they are required to obtain a personal instrument and method book. Each class, we focus on position practice, the mechanics of playing, and music theory. We schedule performances toward the middle and end of the school year.

Intermediate Strings

This mid-level strings class at Liberty focuses on advancing individual skills while introducing ensemble performances. Students need a personal instrument for at-home practice. The year opens with each student receiving concert music because this class performs with the advanced strings class. To qualify for this class, a student must have played for at least a year and know all one-octave scales and all basic rhythms. The year is sprinkled with trips to the high school, Richmond Symphony concerts, and amusement park visits where students can compete as well as have fun!

Advanced Strings

Advanced students must have all two-octave scales and all intermediate and basic rhythms mastered because we start the school year with concert music right away. Students need their own personal instrument to bring to and from class. This course has multiple solo auditions throughout the year as well as ensemble competitions ranging from those at other schools to those at amusement parks. We learn more in-depth music theory as well as Grade III music. The overall goal is to prepare students for the rigorous playing level of high school orchestras.
